Adaptive rowing is an integral part of the activity of Clube Naval Infante D. Henrique and is an essential part of the club’s mission: to make rowing accessible to everyone, regardless of physical, sensory or motor limitations.

This practice allows people with disabilities to experience and practise rowing safely, with supervision and adapted to their abilities, in an inclusive environment based on mutual respect.

Adaptive rowing is an adaptation of traditional rowing, using:

  • equipment adjusted to the athlete’s needs,
  • specific training methodologies,,
  • and individualised technical supervision.

The aim is to enable active participation in sport, promoting autonomy, confidence and physical and psychological well-being.

Adaptive rowing is intended for people with:

  • physical or motor disabilities,
  • permanent or temporary functional limitations,
  • specific needs requiring adaptation of equipment or training.

Each case is assessed individually, ensuring that the activity takes place under appropriate conditions of safety and comfort.

  • Sessions led by coaches with sensitivity and experience in supporting athletes with specific needs
  • Progressive adaptation of training to each participant’s pace and goals
  • Use of appropriate equipment whenever necessary
  • Calm, controlled environment focused on a positive experience for the athlete

The focus is on participation, learning and well-being, not on competitive performance, although that is also possible.

At Infante, adaptive rowing is seen as a tool for social inclusion, community integration and valuing diversity. At Infante, adaptive rowing is seen as a tool for social inclusion, community integration and valuing diversity.

In this sense, adaptive rowing is promoted as a barrier-free activity, aligned with the club’s values and its role in the community.
